After the First World War, an act of Parliament distilled a disorganized, inefficient private railway system into four geographically apportioned railways. These went on to serve commuters, travelers, and industry until the late 1940s, when the railways were nationalized. The posters in this calendar are a small sample of each railway s robust advertising output during this period, when both accomplished landscape painters and little-known designers were hired to create these enticing scenes.
